The ENT Department of AOU di Modena, spanning the Policlinico di Modena and the Ospedale di Baggiovara, has since 2021 hosted national and international surgeons, residents and allied health professionals for structured clinical observerships under the direction of Prof. Daniele Marchioni and his surgical team.

Over six consecutive years, the Department has welcomed 78 international observers from 26 countries across five continents, in addition to Italian participants, establishing itself as a recognised destination for training in endoscopic ear surgery, lateral skull base surgery and, increasingly, head and neck oncologic surgery.

This document proposes the formal structuring of that experience into the Surgical Academy Course: a standing, dedicated observership programme with a defined curriculum, eligibility criteria, fee structure and online application pathway, intended to be presented to prospective national and international participants through a dedicated course website.

What you will able to do

The Surgical Academy Course provides structured, progressive training in endoscopic ear surgery, otology and hearing disorders, lateral skull base surgery and head and neck surgery. The Department’s operating schedule combines otologic and oncologic head and neck procedures, giving participants broad exposure across the full spectrum of ENT surgery.

Identify

Surgical anatomy, pathologies and indications across ear, lateral skull base and head and neck surgery

Describe

Surgical instrumentation, intraoperative decision-making and the management of complications

Interpret

Audiometric and radiological findings relevant to surgical planning

Develop

Practical skills through simulation and cadaveric dissection, and consolidate clinical understanding through supervised observation and case discussion

Demonstrate

Professional conduct and effective collaboration within an ENT surgical team
